How to Give Your Business The Voice it Deserves

I remember when I first started out as an entrepreneur. Times definitely seemed a lot simpler when it came to business marketing (giving your business a voice).

I remember paying the yellow pages around $25,000 a year and my phone rang every single day! It felt like magic.

It today's world there's a lot more noise.

  • Which social media channel should you be on?
  • Do you need to do video?
  • Are the old media channels still viable?
  • How are you going to get the phone to ring?
  • How are you going to get your ideal clients to contact you via chat, email, or a contact form?

These are all questions that any savvy business owner needs to be able to answer. The challenge is that there are so many options that the tools start distracting from the message.

When it comes down to it, the formula for success is actually just as simple as it was twenty years ago. The unfortunate part is that it's been hidden from view by all this new technology we have.

The formula is pretty simple:

Step 1: Figure out who you want to serve.

Step 2: Figure out where those people hang out (online and offline).

Step 3: Position your business and team as the type of people that your ideal client wants to work with.

Step 4: Create easy ways for them to connect with you and start having meaningful conversations.

Notice that I said "simple" above, not "easy". I wish they were the same word, but they're not.

The good news is that in the end all you have to do is start building relationships with the right people who in the long run want to do business with you, or know other people that want to do business with you (referrals).

The challenge in this simple plan comes when you realize that you may or may not know the answers to the following questions:

  • What does my ideal client find attractive?
  • What words do they use to describe their problem?
  • Where are they hanging out talking about solving these problems?
  • What is an attractive offer that feels like a low commitment "coffee date" that they're willing to embark on with you and your business?

When you can answer these questions (all of them), you're going to be in a position that allows you to spread the news about your business.

Here at Business Marketing Engine (BME for short) we believe that every business deserves a voice.

The products and services you provide need to be put into the right story format so that the right clients, those perfect "coffee dates", can start to happen.

I know that it's overwhelming when you think about marketing in the traditional sense, but it doesn't have to be. When you change the language you're using and start to realize that you simply need to give your business a voice, things get a lot easier.
